Ascension Community Theatre announces forthcoming auditions for its Summer Musical, Gypsy. Vocal auditions, to be scheduled by appointment, will begin on Friday, March 26, beginning at 5:00 pm and continue Saturday, March 27, beginning at 10:00 am. Callbacks will be held on Saturday, March 27 and Sunday, March 28. Call Bryan at 225.715.7463 to make an appointment.

A “musical fable” of ambition and family ties set against the backdrop of vaudeville’s dying days, Gypsy is based on the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee and features a book by Arthur Laurents, music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. The pinnacle of Broadway’s Golden Age, the show boasts such standards as “All I Need is the Girl,” “If Momma Was Married,” and “Everything’s Coming Up Roses.”

Those wishing to audition should prepare a 32-bar selection from the musical theatre canon that shows vocal range and personality. An accompanist will be provided. Director Bryan Songy is looking for fearless and creative actors to fill the following roles:

• Rose – Alto with belt (35-55), A powerhouse, seemingly invulnerable stage mother
• Louise – Mezzo (18-25), Rose’s “ugly duckling” who unwillingly finds the spotlight
• Herbie – Baritone (40-55), A charming showbiz insider seeking normalcy
• Dainty June – Mezzo (16-20), Frighteningly sweet singer, the product of her mother
• Tulsa – High Baritone (18-25), Dancer with dreams of stardom. Tap skills a must
• Miss Mazeppa – Alto (30-60), Burlesque belter who has a knack for the trumpet
• Electra – Mezzo (50-100), Tired burlesque dancer who gets creative with lightbulbs
• Tessie-Tura – Mezzo (20-50), A former ballerina who’s learned a less-refined dance
• Baby June – Belter (6-10), A barrel of vaudeville dynamite, June’s young counterpart
• Baby Louise – Spoken (8-13), Highly intelligent but awkward, the younger Louise

In addition, the cast requires a dancing ensemble of 4 young men, 4 young women, and 4 young boys. Other actors will be assigned multiple roles to complete the Gypsy company.

Gypsy, the summer offering from ACT’s 10th Anniversary Season, will run July 8-11, 15-18, with gala performances July 23-24. The show will be directed by Bryan Songy, assisted by Susanne Mire, and produced by Michael Mason, with music direction by Bret Bello.

Call the theatre box office with any questions.
